During COVID-19’s summer surge, UAB couldn’t spare ICU beds for patients, but it could share its expertise with Whitfield Regional Hospital in Demopolis, thanks to a tele-ICU partnership between the two hospitals announced in April of this year. Tele-ICU Director Steve Stigler, M.D., (Associate Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care Medicine) and other pulmonary experts were able to conduct exams, check vital signs, review patient records, and monitor alert systems from more than 100 miles away. For the patients who were especially critical and needed different types of life-support, the tele-ICU continuously provided high-quality care.

Michael Vinikoor, M.D., (Associate Professor, Infectious Diseases) will be a co-principal investigator for an NIH-funded project, Zambia Alabama HIV Alcohol Comorbidities Program, or ZAMBAMA. Researchers will work to reduce unhealthy alcohol use to improve HIV outcomes in Zambia and Alabama.
Subhashini Bolisetty, Ph.D., (Associate Professor, Nephrology) has received the Graduate Biomedical Sciences “Excellence in Teaching” Award. This award honors students and faculty who excel in their commitment and service to GBS. Congratulations, Dr. Bolisetty.
Stefanie Krick, M.D., Ph.D., (Assistant Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) will serve as a new assistant director for research for the Medical Scientist Training Program in the UAB Heersink School of Medicine. In this role, she will advise and mentor students and assist with transitions throughout the education process.
The UAB Center for AIDS Research has been awarded five supplements to its P30 parent grant to enhance the knowledge base needed for “Ending the HIV Epidemic: A Plan for America.” The awards will be used to expand a pilot project from 2021 and support new projects to understand the role of health disparities in HIV prevention and treatment.
We give a warm welcome to Anam Hameed, M.D., a new general gastroenterologist in the division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. She joins us from the University of Arkansas, where she completed her second fellowship. Dr. Hameed has a special interest in nutrition and motility.
Katalin Susztak, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, will present the annual Andreoli lecture “Diabetes and Kidney Diseases, Novel Insights in 2021” at noon on Wednesday, October 27, via Zoom.
