In Case You Missed It…We are extremely proud of our researchers who have shown for the first time that pulmonary fibrosis can be reversed using the diabetes drug treatment Metformin. These exciting findings reported in Nature Medicine have been heralded in thirty-six outlets across the U.S., India, U.K., China, Germany, Mexico, Spain and Turkey.
Jennifer Hicks, MSHA, MBA (Program Director, Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care) has the distinction of being named the Department’s Employee of the Year for 2018! Jennifer has been an integral part of the growth and success of the Center for Palliative and Supportive Care and is an outstanding representative of the Department. She will be honored at a reception on Wednesday, August 15. Congratulations, Jennifer!
According to a study led by Joonseok Kim, MD (Assistant Professor, Cardiovascular Disease), taking multivitamins and mineral supplements does not prevent strokes, heart attacks or deaths related to cardiovacular disease. These findings were recently published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes.
We are proud to announce that Jennifer Pollock, MD (Professor, Nephrology) has been selected as the 2019 Ernest H. Starling Distinguished Lecturer by the Water & Electrolyte Homeostasis (WEH) Steering Committee. The Starling Award is the most prestigious of the WEH Section awards, and is given annually to an American Physiological Society member recognized for exceptional contributions and lifelong dedication to WEH-related research.
Terrence Shaneyfelt, MD, MPH (Professor, General Internal Medicine) has co-authored a consensus statement with international leaders in evidence-based medicine in JAMA entitled “Core Competencies in Evidence-Based Practice for Health Professionals.” The study identifies a set of competencies for teaching evidence-based practice.
Three-year-old cancer survivor, Skye Savren-McCormick, recently served as a flower girl in her bone marrow donor’s wedding. Ayman Saad, MD (Associate Professor, Hematology and Oncology) performed the transplant that helped Hayden Hatfield Ryals save Skye’s life.
