Robert Gaston, MD (Professor Emeritus, Nephrology) received the distinguished lifetime achievement award from the American Society of Transplantation (AST) at a special awards ceremony last weekend. This is AST's most prestigious award which honors a senior investigator who has made significant contributions to the field of transplantation.

Congratulations to Caroline Harada, MD (Associate Professor, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) who was awarded the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine award by the School of Medicine. This award recognizes faculty members who demonstrate both clinical excellence and outstanding compassion as well as respect for patients, their families, and healthcare colleagues.
Congratulations to Monica Baskin, PhD (Professor, Preventive Medicine) who has been selected to serve as a representative for the UAB School of Medicine on the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) Council of Faculty and Academic Societies (CFAS). The AAMC CFAS focuses on a wide range of activities of concern to academic medical faculty.

Internal Medicine Residents Channing Brown, MD (Medicine/Pediatrics) and Matt Burden, MD (PGY-2) recently received heartfelt praise from one of their patients. “They gave me excellent, understandable information that left me at ease with what was being done for me throughout my hospital stay.” The patient also stated, “Both of these residents are outstanding representatives of UAB medicine.” Keep up the good work, Drs. In an editorial entitled “Suggested Paths to Fixing the Opioid Crisis: Directions and Misdirections” published in JAMA Network Open, Stefan Kertesz, MD, MSc (Professor, Preventive Medicine) compares two related articles which add to the current discussion and reveal some potential for misdirection from the goal of reversing current trends in opioid use.
Sandhya Mudumbi, MD, Jackie Palmore, and Shantel Ruffin, RN have been selected to participate in the UAB Addiction Scholars Program. This 15-month program for health care professionals taught by UAB experts in addiction medicine was created last year to help providers recognize addiction in their patients and be prepared to deliver the comprehensive care those patients require.
The 1917 Outpatient, Research and Dental Clinic was featured in last week’s Monday Mailing. The 1917 Clinic, established by Michael Saag, MD (Professor, Infectious Diseases) in 1988, is the largest dedicated HIV outpatient facility in Alabama, and it is steadfast in its original mission to provide compassionate care to persons living with HIV. The story also spotlights Carol Ann Linn, BSN, RN, who has devotedly worked in the 1917 Clinic for 28 years.
Coming next week to Medical Grand Rounds: Timothy Blackwell, MD, Professor and Director, Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Vanderbilt University, will present “Genetic Approaches to Unlock the Mystery of Interstitial Lung Disease” at noon on Wednesday, June 13, in the Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium.
