The Association of Community Cancer Centers recently recognized UAB’s Patient Care Connect Program with its prestigious Innovator Award for its “forward-thinking” approach to improve access and quality of care. The Nephrology Ambulatory Clinic, directed by Associate Professor Gaurav Jain, MD, won this year’s award for Highest Overall Medical Practice CAHPS Percentile during UABHS 2017 Quality Week. Kudos for a job well done!
Three divisions have been working feverishly to initialize the new OnCore clinical trials management system, and they are set to go live next week! The Department extends a hearty THANK YOU to all the users and Super Users in Cardiology, Endocrinology, and Infectious Disease! To give you an idea of the scope of this project, these three divisions alone have migrated more than 80 trials from the former software into the new system.
Two fellows from the Division of Cardiovascular Disease, Navkaranbir Bajaj, MD, MPH, and Nirav Patel, MD, have co-authored a paper about PCSK9 inhibitors—newer cholesterol lowering medications which dramatically lower bad cholesterol to less than 50 mg/dL. The results contradict the general consensus that lowering cholesterol that dramatically will cause cognitive side effects. In the largest analyses to date, the investigators were able to show that these drugs are neurologically innocuous.
Sarah Sterrett, a researcher in the Division of Infectious Diseases, was selected as DOM Employee of the Month for November. A dependable, conscientious team player who is always willing to assist, Sarah’s dedication to accuracy, teamwork, and creativity makes the lab environment both fun and productive. The Department is proud to celebrate employees like Sarah. Please think of others you know and nominate them for this award!
Curiosity Could Earn You $1,000. The deadline for the inaugural informatics abstract contest has been extended to Sunday, January 7, 2018. The first UAB i2b2 Abstract Contest will provide cash prizes for the best scientific abstract based on data from UAB’s i2b2 (Informatics for Integrating Biology and the Bedside) clinical data repository. The contest is co-sponsored by the UAB Informatics Institute and the UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science, and the details are posted online.
The Research and Innovations in Medical Education (RIME) program is pleased to announce a request for applications to the Faculty Development for Educators – Immersion Program. Faculty interested in pursuing advanced degrees or immersion programs in medical education could receive up to $7,500 in support of these goals. Deadline is Wednesday, January 31, 2018.
