The inaugural Leadership DOM course is in full swing, with 60 faculty and staff participating. This highly interactive professional development initiative—facilitated by McDonald Graham and Associates—is designed to address key skills that will improve participants’ ability to lead the Department toward our mission and goals.
Erica Stringer-Reasor, M.D. (Assistant Professor, Hematology and Oncology) has been awarded a $450,000 grant from Susan G. Komen to support a clinical trial investigating PARP inhibitors for the treatment for HER2-positive breast cancer, which tends to be more aggressive than other breast cancers. William Curry, M.D., MACP (Professor, General Internal Medicine) is Governor-elect of the Alabama chapter of the American College of Physicians. He will serve in 2018–19, taking over for Gustavo Heudebert, M.D., MACP.
Congratulations to Lou Bridges, M.D., Ph.D. (Director, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) who was named Vice President of the Rheumatology Research Foundation Board of Directors for 2018–2020. He will serve as leader to support the foundation’s mission of funding research and advancing treatment of rheumatology.
The first UAB i2b2 Abstract Contest will provide cash prizes for the best scientific abstract based on data from UAB’s i2b2 (Informatics for Integrating Biology and the Bedside) clinical data repository. The deadline has been extended to Sunday, January 7, 2018. The contest is co-sponsored by the UAB Informatics Institute and the UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science, and the details are posted online.

On Thursday, December 7 at noon, the UAB Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) will host a World AIDS Day Celebration in the Doubletree Ballroom. Jeanne Marrazzo, PhD, MD (Professor/Division Director, Infectious Diseases) and Aadia Rana, MD (Associate Professor, Infectious Diseases) will discuss the pathway to achieving the Paris Declaration 90-90-90 Goal in the fight against AIDS by 2020 and ending the spread of AIDS by 2030. The 90-90-90 Goal is: 90 percent of people living with HIV knowing their HIV status; 90 percent of those who know their status becoming engaged in care and on antiretroviral therapy (ART); 90 percent of those on ART achieving full viral suppression. Birmingham is one of 13 cities in the United States dedicated to committing local resources to achieve key Paris Declaration goals (90-90-90) in the fight against AIDS by 2020 and ending the spread of AIDS by 2030. Their luncheon discussion will be followed by an information fair. RSVP online.
