Jori May, MD (Fellow, Hematology and Oncology) was featured in the NYT article, “Her Various Symptoms Seemed Unrelated. Then One Doctor Put It All Together,” about Schnitzler syndrome, an immune disorder that caused shaking chills and fever, nausea and vomiting, hives and bone pain. Pathology resident Forest Huls, MD, was also recognized for his partnership in the diagnosis.

Lisa Willett, MD (Professor and Program Director, Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency Program) was recently named president-elect of the Association of Program Directors in Medicine Council. Brandy Freiger, Education Administrator, was appointed as an APDIM councilor.
Congratulations to Robert Rich, MD (Professor Emeritus, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) on the recent publication of the 5th edition of the textbook, Clinical Immunology: Principles and Practice. Harry Schroeder Jr., MD, PhD (Professor, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) was also one of the five associate editors of the book which has 98 chapters, 1,373 pages, and 207 contributors from all over the world—16 of whom are from UAB and 8 from the DOM.

Thomas Huddle, MD, PhD (Professor, General Internal Medicine) has been selected to the American College of Physicians Ethics, Professionalism and Human Rights Committee for the 2018–19 term, which begins in April. Kudos!
Two faculty projects were recently funded by AMC21 2018 Multi-PI Grants designed to enable faculty members to work in multidisciplinary teams and successfully compete for long-term support from funding agencies. Cynthia Brown, MD, MSPH (Professor and Director, Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care) and her team received an award for the project, “Prevention of and Recovery from Hospital-Associated Disability.” Troy Randall, PhD (Professor, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) and his team received this award for “Modulation of Anti-Tumor Immunity via MNK1/2 Inhibition.”
Tinsley Harrison, MD, graces the cover of the March issue of the Annals of the American Thoracic Society, courtesy of Surya Bhatt, MD (Associate Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care) who photographed the iconic statue on University Boulevard. Bhatt and colleagues, who published a review article on lung imaging, “Recent Advances in CT Imaging in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease,” were invited to publish a campus life photo on the cover.
Next week’s Medical Grand Rounds will feature Ashwani Singal, MD, MS (Associate Professor, UAB Gastroenterology and Hepatology) presenting, “Fatty Liver Disease: A Primer for Practicing Physicians,” at noon on Wednesday, February 28, in Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium.
