The Integrative Center for Aging Research (ICAR) has made four $25,000 awards to advance aging research at UAB. These pilot funds will enable investigators to explore stem cell resilience, post-surgery delirium, the effects of androgen therapy on cognition and a new form of cognitive rehab after COVID critical care. Three awardees are from the School of Medicine, and one from the UAB College of Arts and Sciences: Constanza Cortes, PhD (CDIB); Roy Martin, PhD (Neurology); Noha Sharafeldin, MBBCh, PhD (Medicine); and Edward Taub, PhD (CAS, Psychology). Since ICAR's inception, it has invested $350,000 in pilot funding, which has returned more than $19 million in extramural grants and awards.

Mona Fouad, MD, MPH (Professor and Director, Preventive Medicine) and colleagues will lead outreach efforts in Alabama's ethnic and racial minority communities disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic as a part of the Community Engagement Alliance Against COVID-19 Disparities, a $12 million, multi-state NIH program.
Kristina Tymes-Wilbekin (MD-PhD Student, Infectious Diseases) has earned an NIH award to study perceptions of technologies that prevent HIV, STI, and unintended pregnancy. Upon defining cultural factors and attitudes among Kenyan women, she will use findings to develop an assessment tool to explore perspectives among women in the Southern U.S.
Robert Centor, MD (Professor Emeritus, General Internal Medicine) has been selected as the 2020 ACP Jane F. Desforges Distinguished Teacher for demonstrating the "ennobling qualities of a great teacher as judged by the accomplishments of former students" who have themselves become medical educators. Bravo, Dr. Centor!
