We have lost a beloved colleague and an incomparable role model in William E. “Bill” Dismukes, MD, MACP. He died June 19 at age 78. Dr. Dismukes’ remarkable impact reverberates throughout the School of Medicine, where he wore many mantles of leadership during his 35 years of service.
He was the second director of the Division of Infectious Diseases and vice chair for the Department of Medicine, serving twice as its interim chair; and perhaps his greatest legacy rests in his two decades as director of the Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency Program. Carson, Habegger to Co-Lead DOM Peer Mentoring
Tiffany Carson, PhD (Assistant Professor, Preventive Medicine) and Kirk Habegger, PhD (Assistant Professor, Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism) have been selected to co-lead the DOM Peer Mentoring program. Peer mentors help ease the transition from trainee to faculty, helping with logistics, navigating interpersonal relationships, work-life balance, and managing the stresses of an academic career.
Dixon is DOM Employee of the Month
Paula Dixon has been selected as the Department of Medicine Employee of the Month for June 2017! As a lab supervisor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Paula is extremely proficient with research processes and protocols. She has almost 20 years’ lab experience and has helped with the development of training materials due to her knowledge and attention to detail. One junior investigator notes, “Paula has helped me mature into a better investigator.” Think of other incredible staff and nominate them for this monthly recognition!
Pacheco Wins NAMS Travel Award
Lauren Pacheco, MD (PGY-2) was one of 30 recipients of the 2017 NAMS/Pfizer Medical Resident, Fellow, & DNP In-Training Reporter Awards from the North American Menopause Society. She will attend their national Women’s Health Conference in October.
CVD Fellows Examine Optimal Revascularization Strategy
Navkaranbir S. Bajaj, MD, MPH, and Nirav Patel, MD (Fellows, Cardiovascular Disease) have co-first-authored a paper comparing risks and benefits of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in left main coronary artery disease. Senior author Pankaj Arora, MD (Assistant Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) says the results point clinicians away from relying on traditional SYNTAX risk scores in favor of individualized decision-making in choosing between the two procedures.

Hitesh Batra, MD (Assistant Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care) discusses UAB's expertise in performing the full range of interventional pulmonology procedures, including medical thoracoscopy. Nirmal Sharma, MD, gives an introduction to ECMO and discusses its indications in cardiac and respiratory support.
