A two-drug combination therapy for cystic fibrosis improves lung function in patients with certain mutations in the CFTR gene responsible for the disease. In findings published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Steve Rowe, MD, MSPH (Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) and UAB researchers report that the combination of tezacaftor and ivacaftor improved lung function by nearly 7 percent in a subset of patients.

Michael Barnett, MD, MS (Assistant Professor, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) has been invited to participate in the ACGME Hospice and Palliative Medicine Milestone Working Group. The group will review and revise current milestones in the competency areas of interpersonal and communication skills, practice-based learning and improvement, systems-based practice, and professionalism.
The Department is proud to celebrate Heidi Chamblin as Employee of the Month for October. As an Office Associate II in the Division of Nephrology, Heidi is an organized, efficient and dependable team player who works with several of our transplant nephrologists. Heidi is the “go to” person in the division for any creative ideas, and she goes above and beyond planning divisional activities. She makes Nephrology a better place!
