More Good News for January 3, 2018
Several DOM Program Administrators & Coordinators worked with colleagues across the School of Medicine on a heartwarming holiday service project. Together, they filled over 25 backpacks with necessities like toiletries, socks, and pajamas for DHR officers to give to kids who have to be moved to safer homes on short notice. Kudos for their spirit of generosity and compassion!
The DOM extends sincere congratulations to the inaugural class of the UAB Advanced Communication Training (ACT) Institute. These ACT Scholars will begin teaching communication skills courses across UAB Medicine in the coming year, furthering the goal of providing empathetic, compassionate communication to patients, their families, and fellow employees. The ACT project is funded through an HSF/GEF grant awarded to Michael Barnett, MD (Assistant Professor, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care). The inaugural class includes:

Abolfazl Zarjou, MD, PhD (Assistant Professor, Nephrology) recently received a K08 grant from the NHLBI to study "Targeting ferritin in vascular calcification associated with CKD."
The Department of Medicine’s Trainee Research Symposium is annually held on the first Wednesday in March. Last year, we had over 100 posters submitted! The deadline for entries is Tuesday, January 16, so talk to your mentors and submit your abstract online. Prizes are awarded in four categories: Fellow, Resident, Post-doc, and Grad Student.
The deadline for the inaugural informatics abstract contest has been extended to Sunday, January 7, 2018. The first UAB i2b2 Abstract Contest will provide cash prizes for the best scientific abstract based on data from UAB’s i2b2 (Informatics for Integrating Biology and the Bedside) clinical data repository. The contest is co-sponsored by the UAB Informatics Institute and the UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science, and the details are posted online.
The Research and Innovations in Medical Education (RIME) program is pleased to announce a request for applications to the Faculty Development for Educators – Immersion Program. Faculty interested in pursuing advanced degrees or immersion programs in medical education could receive up to $7,500 in support of these goals. Deadline is Wednesday, January 31, 2018. Details and application instructions are posted online.
