In the spirit of the season, Internal Medicine Residents prepared and served dinner to patients undergoing cancer treatment and their families at the American Cancer Society Joe Lee Griffin Hope Lodge this week. The annual service event sponsored by the resident wellness committee offers residents an opportunity to make a difference for cancer patients outside of the hospital. They report it was a wonderful way to spend #TacoTuesday.
More Good News for December 19, 2018
A reception naming Michal Mrug, MD (Professor, Nephrology) as the Detraz Endowed Professor in Polycystic Kidney Disease was held on Monday, December 17. The professorship was established in honor of Cutessa Detraz Bourge and her family whose history of Polycystic Kidney Disease inspired their philanthropy. Thanks to this endowment, Dr. Mrug will be able to further study PKD to find future treatments for his patients.
Robert Kimberly, MD (Professor, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) has been elected as a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. He holds patents in genetics and the contributions of genetic variation to disease, including how genetic variants affect the ability of antibodies to bind to certain receptors. He also holds patents on several novel therapeutic monoclonal antibodies for treatment of autoimmune disease and cancer. Congratulations Dr. Kimberly!
Gabrielle Rocque, MD (Assistant Professor, Hematology and Oncology) has been invited to join the editorial board for the Journal of Clinical Oncology. The JCO is the single most authoritative resource for disseminating significant clinical oncology research. Great job, Dr. Rocque!
Marie Bakitas, DNSc, CRNP, (Professor, Co-Director, Center for Palliative and Supportive Care) has received the Pathfinder in Palliative Care award from the American Cancer Society. Each year, they recognize someone who demonstrates innovation and ingenuity and contributes to the global advancement of palliative care. Congrats on this prestigious award, Dr. Bakitas!
Tatyana Isayeva Waldrop (Researcher V, Nephrology) was selected as the Department of Medicine Employee of the Month for December! In addition to conducting scientific experiments, she handles lab management which includes organization of regulatory and training documents for all lab staff. She is a dedicated team player and has tremendous initiative. Think of others you know and nominate them for this distinction.
Tis the season to be sharing! GME Program Coordinators in the School of Medicine spent their holiday party packing up backpacks to give to the DHR Bessemer office for kids in need. They filled 30 backpacks with gift cards, clothes, hygiene items and more. Keep up the good work!
