More Good News for October 10, 2018
John W. Baddley, MD, MSPH (Professor, Infectious Diseases) and colleagues have published results of a study comparing the effects of an algorithmic approach that defined diagnostic evaluation, antibiotic selection, and duration of therapy for staphylococcal bacteremia versus the standard clinical care. They found that the algorithm based therapy was safe and led to a reduction in antibiotic use. Kudos to Dr. Baddley!
The annual flu campaign is underway, and we are aimed at reaching full compliance by December 15. All employees are required to participate. Exemptions will only be allowed based on medical concerns or strongly held religious beliefs, and individuals must complete and turn in their exemption form no later than November 1. The Division of Infectious Diseases held a ribbon cutting on Monday, October 1, to officially launch its own research clinic at the Community Health Building on 20th street. For many years, they have been conducting research at various locations such as Jefferson County Department of Health, the UAB Student Health Center and the 1917 Personal Health Clinic. The new clinic will be the directed by Jeanne Marrazzo, MD, (Professor, Infectious Diseases), and will enable researchers to screen and test for certain sexually transmitted diseases.
