Kellie Flood, MD (Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) and Emily Simmons, MSN, RN-BC, CNL (NICHE Coordinator) led the Seventh Annual UAB Geriatric Quality Symposium on Monday, September 26, celebrating the inter-professional collaboration of 44 Geriatric Scholars in 12 quality improvement projects. The presentation included outcomes reports, recognition of scholars and community partners, awards for outstanding geriatric care, and 62 new inter-professional scholars were accepted into next year’s Geriatric Scholar Program.
Louis Dell’Italia, MD (Cardiovascular Disease) was recently published in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. His findings suggest that earlier intervention for Mitral Valve Regurgitation can help prevent Left Ventricular decline after surgery.
Kudos to Charlie Weldon, MD (PGY-2) for his winning Clinical Vignette presented at RIME last week. His poster outlined “Complications from Weight-loss Surgery Requiring ECMO.”
Caroline Harada, MD (Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) led a Service Learning project with UAB medical students at the East Lake Farmers’ Market last Saturday, demonstrating how to purchase and prepare healthy meals at low cost.
Vineeta Kumar, MD (Nephrology) was recently commended for her spectacular results as a clinical educator. As teacher of the renal module, her scores from the medical students “set the standard” for teaching excellence. The Department of Medicine salutes her for her tremendous influence on our next generation of physicians.
Will Callans (Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) is the Department of Medicine Employee of the Month for September 2016! Will has an exceptional combination of terrific people skills and technical competence that advances to the Palliative Section’s scientific discovery and clinical research. A reception will be held in his honor at 4:00 p.m. on October 5th in CH19-207.
This month’s DOM Research Spotlight shines on André Ballesteros-Tato, PhD (Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology). Dr. Ballesteros-Tato’s lab is currently focused on understanding the differentiation of CD4 T cell into T follicular helper cells, which are the cells that help B cells produce antibodies. Nazmul Islam (DOM-IT Administrator) and his team took 3rd place in the peer-reviewed poster competition at the 2016 REDCap Conference. This terrific recognition from REDCap experts worldwide hailed the DOM implementation of REDCap for emphasizing system architecture, not just features.
