Explore UAB

For the first time ever, Renal won Argus Award for Best MS1 Organ Module. This is a testament to the tremendous efforts of all three Co-Directors: Nephrologists Eric Judd, MD, and Vineeta Kumar, MD, and Mark Bevensee, PhD (Cell, Developmental, & Integrative Biology) as well as the enthusiastic involvement of the Division of Nephrology. Kudos on this terrific recognition from the medical students!

The Department sincerely congratulates Rodney O. Tucker, MD, MMM (Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) on his recent promotion to Professor. We failed to include him in last week’s list of those who also achieved this important milestone. Our apologies to Dr. Tucker for the oversight, and our thanks for all he has done to offer care, comfort, and compassion to our patients and their families through the UAB Center for Palliative and Supportive Care.

We are also delighted to celebrate ten faculty members who earned the rank of Associate Professor effective October 1.

A major effort is underway to establish a VA Health Services Research and Development (HSR&D) Center of Innovation (COIN) in Birmingham. One big step in the right direction is a new Investigator-Initiated Research award for Sara J. Knight, PhD (Preventive Medicine). This $1 million, 4-year grant will support research in precision medicine and how Veteran’s values and preferences impact its delivery.

Efstathia Andrikopoulou, MD (Fellow, Cardiovascular Disease) has received the American Heart Association’s Women in Cardiology Trainee Awards for Excellence. This award recognizes outstanding academic and clinical performance in women cardiology fellows during cardiovascular-related specialty training. The grant subsidizes travel expenses to the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions in November.

Amie Traylor is the DOM Employee of the Month for October. She is the Laboratory Manager for more than 15 investigators and research staff in the lab of Anupam Agarwal, MD (Director, Nephrology). Amie is an integral part of the team. Her enthusiasm is boundless, and she inspires others to do their best possible work. Think of outstanding employees you know, and nominate them for DOM Employee of the Month.

Open Enrollment for UAB Benefits begins Friday, October 28, and lasts through Monday, November 14. Enrollment is ACTIVE, meaning you must sign into the online portal and select your coverage, or you will NOT have benefits next year.
