The Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency Program retreated to Oak Mountain State park for Camp Dismukes this weekend. The entire program was provided coverage so they could build teamwork and camaraderie (i.e. enjoy food, fun, kickball, and tug-of-war).

Julian Booker, MD, has been appointed Director of Echocardiography within the Section of General Cardiology, Prevention, and Imaging in the Division of Cardiovascular Disease. Dr. Booker succeeds esteemed inaugural Director of Echocardiography, Navin Nanda, MD, who led the program to national prominence during his tenure of more than three decades.
Pankaj Arora, MD, and Navkaranbir Bajaj, MD, MPH (Cardiovascular Disease) recently published a meta-analysis of stroke prevention therapies in PLOS One. Their analysis concluded that oral anticoagulants and anatomical strategies are all equally effective for stroke prevention when compared to dose-adjusted vitamin K antagonists, but with different safety profiles.
Gregory Payne, MD, PHD (Fellow, Cardiovascular Disease) earned second place at the 2016 Northwestern Cardiovascular Young Investigators’ Forum—a gathering of 40 junior faculty and fellows in cardiology selected from across the nation to present their research.
Two DOM physician-scientists will receive one-year pilot awards from the Palliative Research Enhancement Project (PREP) this year. Anand Iyer, MD (Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) will explore Palliative Care Intervention for Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and their Caregivers. Noha Sharafeldin, MD, PhD (Postdoctoral Scholar, Institute of Cancer Outcomes and Survivorship) will be researching intervention strategies to improve cognitive functioning in hematologic cancer survivors after stem cell transplantation.
Mike Mugavero, MD (Infectious Diseases) recently collaborated on a report for amFAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research entitled Curbing the HIV Epidemic by Supporting Effective Engagement in HIV Care: Recommendations for Health Plans and Health Care Purchasers. The report seeks to encourage health plans and health care purchasers to take actions that can improve the care and management of their patients.
UAB Medicine has released a new video on the MD Learning Channel: Promoting One's Own Beta Cell Mass to Treat Diabetes. Anath Shalev, MD (Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism) gives a 15-minute overview of her research which suggests novel treatments with Verapamil for diabetes.
