The Max Cooper Awards for Research Excellence are the highest awards for research in the Department of Medicine. The 2016 Awardees are Monica Baskin, PhD (Preventive Medicine) Troy Randall, PhD (Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) Jane Schwebke, MD (Infectious Diseases) James Shikany, DrPH (Preventive Medicine).
Sarah Marucci, MD, Barton Sanders, MD, Chad Wade, MD, and Charles Weldon, MD, have earned the C. Glenn Cobbs Book Award for best admission write-ups at the VA.
Keith M. Swetz, MD (Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) has received The Hastings Center Cunniff-Dixon Early Career Physician Award in recognition of his exemplary care of patients in end-of-life situations.
Qiana Matthews, PhD (Infectious Diseases) received a UAB CFAR Pilot Award to study “Cell Specific Exosomes Have Preferential Binding to HIV-1 and Facilitate HIV-1 Infection in the Central Nervous System.” She shares this award with Brian Sims, MD, PhD (Neonatology).
Orlando Gutierrez, MD (Nephrology) joined Good Day Alabama (WBRC) this week to discuss kidney disease and Alabama Kidney Action Day—a local awareness event in honor of National Kidney Month—which will be held this Saturday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at DeBardeleben Park in Bessemer. It includes free kidney health screenings, other free health screenings, healthy food samples, family-friendly entertainment, and fitness demos.
Nominations are now open for the 2016 Dean’s Excellence Awards. Two awards—one to a junior faculty member and the other to a senior faculty member—will be given in each of five areas: service, teaching, research, diversity enhancement and mentorship.
