The front cover of June’s Journal of Oncology Practice highlights "Using Patient Navigation to Increase African-American Participants in Clinical Trials." The research led by Mona Fouad, MD, MPH (Director, Preventive Medicine) demonstrates that the patient navigation model holds promise as a strategy to reduce disparities in cancer clinical trial participation. Patient navigation for clinical trials successfully retained 74.5% of the clinical trial participants, as compared to 37.5% for non-patient navigation trial participants.
Min Xie, MD, PhD (Cardiovascular Disease) was recently recognized for his exemplary bedside manner. The UAB Patient Advocates Manager reports that his kindness and compassion alleviated his patient's concerns and brought her peace of mind. The Department salutes Dr. Xie for his patient-centered approach.
Raegan Durant, MD, MPH (Preventive Medicine) has been appointed to the NIH Behavioral Medicine: Interventions and Outcomes Study Section. As a member, he will review behavioral and biobehavioral approaches to health care.
A multi-center multiple myeloma clinical trial led by Primary Investigator Luciano Costa, MD, PhD (Hematology and Oncology) has completed patient enrollment and will follow patients over the next 14 months.
G.M. Anantharamaiah, PhD (Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) will be honored for his contributions to the field of lipoprotein biochemistry at the upcoming Atherosclerosis and Clinical Cardiology Conference. Dr. Anantharamaiah developed AEM-28-14, a peptide that dramatically reduces VLDL cholesterol and triglycerides in animal models.
Erin Estrada (Nephrology) is a Dialysis Access Coordinator. She is recognized as Employee of the Month for being effective, courteous, and friendly. "Erin works with a sick patient population and has always displayed compassion and patience when calling patients to discuss their problems." The RIME program is pleased to announce a request for applications to the Faculty Development for Educators – Immersion Program. The purpose of this RFA is to identify up to three UASOM faculty members who apply for advanced degrees or immersion programs in medical education. Up to $10,000 may be awarded to each successful applicant. Deadline is August 31.
