Mark Dransfield, MD (Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) has been elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the national honor society of physician-scientists age 50 or younger. He will be inducted in April, pending the formal vote of the ASCI. Dr. Dransfield serves as the Medical Director of the UAB Lung Health Center, and his clinical research primarily focuses on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Infectious Diseases faculty Greer Burkholder, MD, MSPH; James Willig, MD, MSPH; Mike Mugavero, MD; and Mike Saag, MD, co-authored a paper in JAMA Cardiology, “Types of Myocardial Infarction Among Human Immunodeficiency Virus–Infected Individuals in the United States.”
Kelly Hyndman, PhD (Nephrology) received the 2017 American Physiological Society Renal Section Research Recognition Award for meritorious research by a young investigator at the APS Experimental Biology Meeting.
Cardiovascular Disease faculty Pankaj Arora, MD, Garima Arora, MD, MRCP, and Navkaranbir Singh Bajaj, MD, MPH, were recently published in Circulation, highlighting the benefit of the use of ICD for reducing mortality in non-ischemic cardiomyopathy. Read the UAB News article here.

An article on multiple myeloma by Luciano Costa, MD, and Kelly Godby, MD (Hematology and Oncology) appears on the cover of the latest issue of Blood Advances, presenting recent trends in multiple myeloma incidence and survival by age, race, and ethnicity in the United States.
