Stefan Kertesz, MD, MSc (Preventive Medicine) was recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine. His article and audio interview reframes the argument for the “Housing First” program based on its efficacy and ethical value, and relatively low cost, urging advocates to avoid claims that it will produce a net cost savings, since those claims have not been supported by research.
The Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency Program had two staff members earn the Training Administrators of Graduate Medical Education (TAGME) Accreditation: Brandy Freiger (Fellowship Program Administrator) and Tammy Pickens (Administrative Director).
Guru Sonpavde, MD (Hematology and Oncology) was awarded the Best in Oral Presentation Award for his research “Circulating tumor (ct)-DNA profiling for potentially actionable targets in prostate cancer” at the 8th European Multidisciplinary Meeting on Urological Cancers in November.
Christina Muzny, MD (Infectious Diseases) recently participated in the inaugural NIH/NIAID research career development workshop for current NIAID K awardees. "Fostering Science Leaders" attendees presented their research and also received training on opportunities and challenges of transitioning to research independence and how to design your research career.
Nirav Patel, MD (Fellow/Instructor, Cardiovascular Disease) won a Young Investigator Award at the American Heart Association 2016 meeting for his presentation entitled: “Targeted Temperature Management Strategies After Cardiac Arrest: Should We Re-Evaluate the Role of Hypothermia?”
Jim Raper, PhD, CRNP, JD (Infectious Diseases) has been invited to serve a second term on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Panel on Antiretroviral Guidelines for Adults and Adolescents.
Amy Dean (General Internal Medicine) was recently appointed Co-Chair of the UAB Staff Council’s Staff Development Committee.

Next week at Medical Grand Rounds: Gary Wu, MD, Professor of Gastroenterology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Associate Chief for Research in the Division of Gastroenterology, and Associate Director of the Center for Molecular Studies in Digestive and Liver Disease, will present the annual Basil Hirschowitz lecture, “Diet, the Gut Microbiome, and Its Metabiome in Health and Disease.”
