U.S. News and World Report has ranked five of the specialties within the Department of Medicine among the top 50 in the nation! The Division with the greatest leap in rankings is Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism, which went from “high-performing” to #30 in the country. Kudos to all involved for this national recognition! 

The Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency Program held its 5th Annual Code Week to give second year residents the tools they need to successfully run codes at UAB. The Office of Interprofessional Simulation coordinated the event. Residents, nurses, respiratory therapists, and pharmacy students divided into teams and simulated realistic code scenarios for providing Advanced Cardiac Life Support. 

2014-2015 Teaching Excellence Awards have been given to 25 DOM faculty members with the highest overall teaching effectiveness scores from residents and students. The final five of these outstanding clinician-educators are: Teresa Bryan, MD (General Internal Medicine) Winter Williams, MD (General Internal Medicine) Terrance Shaneyfelt, MD (General Internal Medicine) Jason Morris, MD (General Internal Medicine) and Kevin Leon, MD (Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care).

Two Infectious Diseases faculty members have been elected to leadership positions in the American Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association. Barbara Van Der Pol, PhD, has been named president-elect, and Edward W. Hooks, III, MD, has been elected secretary-treasurer.

The American Cancer Society presented Mona Fouad, MD, MPH (Director, Preventive Medicine) with the St. George National Award, the Society’s most prestigious volunteer honor, in recognition of extraordinary service supporting the Society’s mission to save lives and end the pain and suffering of cancer. She is one of 22 inspirational individuals from across the United States who received the award.  

Tiffany L. Carson, PhD (Preventive Medicine) completed the University of California at San Francisco’s Research in Implementation Science for Equity (RISE) program, a part of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's Program to Increase Diversity among Individuals Engaged in Health-Related Research (PRIDE). She and eleven other scholars from across the country received intensive training on implementation sciences, grant writing, overall career development, and steps for transitioning to research independence.
