More Good News for August 22, 2018
UAB has received $5.67 million in funding to continue to be home to the state-of-the-art O’Brien Center for Acute Kidney Injury Research. The center is one of eight in the nation and the only O’Brien Center devoted to research for Acute Kidney Injury.
New research from UAB suggests art can make an impact when it comes to patient health and well-being. Many hospitalized patients, especially older adults, are at risk to develop delirium during a hospital stay, according to Katrina Booth, MD (ACE Unit Medical Director). The Acute Care for Elders Unit at UAB Highlands in collaboration with UAB Arts in Medicine, studied a poetry and storytelling intervention and found that it improved patient outcomes including delirium.
Swati Gulati, MD (Instructor) and J. Michael Wells, MD (Assistant Professor) Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care, led a team to discover that the use of a standardized electronic health system-based order set to manage acute exacerbations of COPD was associated with a reduction in steroid dose and hospital length of stay. The use of this power-plan for care of complex patients is gaining greater acceptance in clinical practice. Congrats to Drs. Gulati, Wells and their COPD co-investigators!
Michael Saag, MD (Professor of Medicine and Director, UAB Center for AIDS Research) received the first annual Marchase Award, named in honor of Richard B. Marchase, PhD, former UAB vice president for Research and Economic Development. The Marchase Award honors a UAB investigator who leads or promotes interdisciplinary research on campus in the spirit of camaraderie that Marchase personifies. Congrats, Dr. Saag!
The Department of Medicine and UAB Health System were delighted to host Al Siu, MD, MSPH (Professor and Chair Emeritus of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, Mount Sinai) last week to learn more about their innovative Hospital at Home Program. His recent findings in JAMA demonstrate shorter stays, lower readmission rates, fewer emergency department visits, and higher patient satisfaction.
Amy Wang, MD, MBI (Associate Professor, General Internal Medicine) has been named Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, one of the largest medical organizations in the United States, founded to promote the science and art of family medicine. Kudos, Dr. Wang!
