The Department of Medicine’s first ever medical education training video is now available online! The MedEd Moments Series addresses important and often unmet needs in topic areas including: Setting Expectations, Feedback, Learning Climate, Evaluation and more. “Setting Expectations” is the first learning episode in the series and was developed right here in our residency program. More Good News for September 19, 2018
Congrats to the nine DOM faculty members who were recognized at the 2018 Argus Awards! These extraordinary faculty members were nominated and chosen by their medical students. Drs. Chad Burski, Harish Doppalapudi, Shawn Galin, James Johnson, Eric Judd, Vineeta Kumar, Michael Saag, Ashita Tolwani, Martin Young, were awarded during the ceremony on September 7.
Sumanth Prabhu, MD (Professor and Director, Cardiovascular Disease) led a research study that found a group of immune cells called regulatory T-lymphocyte cells, or T-regs, act on their own in heart failure. Instead of preventing inflammation, the cells become inflamed and stop the growth of new capillaries. After the experiment, they realized the importance of T-lymphocyte ablation after heart failure and how it can reverse left-ventricular remodeling. Congrats to Dr. Prabhu and his colleaugues.
Matt Might, PhD (Professor, General Internal Medicine and Director, UAB Hugh Kaul Precision Medicine Institute) was interviewed by the New York Times to discuss his plan to find treatments for patients with rare diseases. He discussed personalized medicine, its challenges and his goal to find future treatments. Keep up the good work, Dr. Might!
Justin Sullivan, MSHA, MBA has joined the Department of Medicine as Administrative Director. He will assist Dr. Landefeld in managing administrative responsibilities and the flow of information in the Chair’s office. He will also handle special initiatives and projects. A native of Mississippi, Justin received his undergrad from Mississippi State and Master of Science in Health Administration and Master of Business Administration from UAB. He spent two years in the Department of Medicine at Northwestern, and most recently served as Manager of Policy and Advocacy Operations at the American Board of Medical Specialties. Welcome back to UAB and the Department of Medicine!
