Congratulations to Carla Copeland, MD (PGY-3) for her first-author publication of a an article on emphysema and central airway collapse in the Annals of American Thoracic Society.
Rajesh Gupta, PhD (Postdoctoral Scholar, Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism) received a 3-year fellowship from the American Diabetes Association. With this award, Gupta will investigate the mechanism by which a secreted protein, compliment 1q-like 3, regulates insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells in the laboratory of Sushant Bhatnagar, PhD (Assistant Professor, Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism). This study will provide insight to the mechanism by which insulin secretion is reduced during type 2 diabetes.
Nirav Patel, MD (Fellow, Cardiovascular Disease) recently presented two papers at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Session. The first reviewed utilization trends, in-hospital mortality, and costs associated with orthotopic heart transplantation and left ventricular assist devices across the US healthcare landscape. The second examined the trends of sarcoidosis hospitalization and in-hospital mortality.
Congratulations to Bryan Becker, PhD (Postdoctoral Scholar, Nephrology) for receiving the American Physiological Society’s Neural Control and Autonomic Regulation Section research award. He will present his abstract at the upcoming NCAR Young Investigator Awards in April. Becker’s research examines how the autonomic nervous system influences blood pressure and kidney function during health and disease states.
If you have been missing an opportunity to connect with fellow faculty and trainees in the Department, we’ve got great news. The DOM Women in Medicine group is re-starting quarterly meetings. Our first meeting will be held at 4pm on Thursday, February 1, in Boshell Building #334. Our topic will be “Confronting Bias in the Workplace.” All women in medicine—MDs, PhDs, trainees—are invited.
The Research and Innovations in Medical Education (RIME) program is pleased to announce a request for applications to the Faculty Development for Educators – Immersion Program. Faculty interested in pursuing advanced degrees or immersion programs in medical education could receive up to $7,500 in support of these goals. Deadline is Wednesday, January 31, 2018. Details and application instructions are posted online.
The Department of Medicine’s Trainee Research Symposium is annually held on the first Wednesday in March. Last year, we had over 100 posters submitted! The deadline for entries is Tuesday, January 16, so talk to your mentors and submit your abstract online. Prizes are awarded in four categories: Fellow, Resident, Post-doc, and Grad Student.
