More Good News for August 8, 2021
The Department of Medicine concludes its 2021 Faculty Honors series by congratulating exemplary faculty on achieving the rank of Associate Professor, Professor, Distinguished Professor, or Emeritus. Their dedication and outstanding scholarship continue to make UAB a highly regarded institution in medicine.
Andrea Cherrington, M.D., MPH, (Professor, Preventive Medicine) will lead the EPIPHANY project to focus on hypertension prevention and education in underserved populations. This effort is a part of the American Heart Association’s $20 million investment in the RESTORE network; UAB is one of five research teams funded.
James Cimino, M.D., (Distinguished Professor, General Internal Medicine) and colleagues have been awarded an R21 to improve electronic health record usability and usefulness with a patient-specific clinical knowledge base. The team will create a sophisticated data structure which aims to find patient information more efficiently.
Jeanne Marrazzo, M.D., MPH (Professor and Director, Infectious Diseases) was elected treasurer of the Infectious Diseases Society of America Board of Directors. IDSA’s mission is to improve the health of individuals, communities, and society by promoting excellence in patient care, education, research, public health, and prevention.
Stefan Kertesz, M.D., MSc (Professor, Preventive Medicine) received the Society of General Internal Medicine’s 2021 David Calkins Award in Health Policy Advocacy in recognition of his ongoing effort to spur a more humane response to individuals dealing with pain and opioid addiction. Well done, Dr. Kertesz!
The DOM is delighted to welcome former CMR Jeremey Walker, M.D., (Assistant Professor, Infectious Diseases) to our faculty. He will be working in the transplant infectious diseases clinic, infection prevention efforts, and teaching a course to first year medical students.
