Cynthia Brown, MD, MSPH (Professor and Director, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) will serve as Vice Chair for Faculty and Staff Development. In her new role, she will focus on the professional development of faculty, staff, and trainees. A major responsibility for this position will be the coordination and promotion of leadership development, including continuation and growth of Leadership DOM and expanding professional coaching at all levels throughout the department.
Upon retirement from his role as BVAMC Chief of Medicine and DOM Vice Chair for Veterans Affairs, John I. Kennedy, MD (Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) will serve as Senior Advisor and Director for Wellness in the DOM. This new position will support and advance the domain of well-being for faculty, staff, and trainees, focusing on engagement and resilience.
Director of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program Clifton Kew, MD (Professor, Nephrology) has implemented telehealth to follow up with kidney transplant patients. Through collaborations with county health departments, patients are spared time away from work and long distance travel.
Kudos to Sumanth Prabhu, MD (Professor, Cardiovascular) who has been selected to serve on the Scientific Board of the Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation, a national organization that trains medical students to be the next leaders in CV science and medicine, and is comprised of leaders in the field who have contributed very significantly to student and trainee mentorship across the U.S.
Senator Doug Jones recently visited with Infectious Diseases faculty to learn about Alabama’s efforts to address antimicrobial resistance as a public health concern. Jeanne Marrazzo, MD, MPH (Professor and Director) and John Baddley, MD, MSPH (Professor) presented information about the importance of antimicrobial stewardship and the need for new antibiotics to be developed.
In a recent issue of the Southern Medical Journal, Carlos Estrada, MD (Professor and Director, General Internal Medicine), Stan Massie, Jr, MD (Professor, General Internal Medicine) and Jordan Crocker, MD (Internal Medicine Resident) explored cultural bias in their manuscript entitled, “Engagement in an Online Cultural Competency Training.” In an online cultural competency training, physicians, residents and students had difficulties defining 'bias.' All agreed that minority patients perceive bias in the care they receive.
Nurses in Hematology/Oncology went above and beyond by organizing and hosting a “celebration of love” for a patient undergoing acute leukemia care and her boyfriend of 11 years who wanted to get married.
Min Xie, MD (Assistant Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) received a two-year R03 award. The grant’s title is “Beta-hydroxybutyrate Protects Mitochondria during Cardiac Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury,” and studies the beneficial effect of ketone bodies in the acute myocardial infarction. In the long run, this study may lead to better treatment of diabetic myocardial infarction patients.
The National Palliative Care Research Center has awarded Yasemin Turkman, PhD, MPH, PMHNP-BC (Assistant Professor, School of Nursing) a two-year Junior Faculty Career Development Award. The title of her project is “Enhancing Access and Acceptability of Palliative Care for Older Underserved Persons with Advanced Cancer in the Deep South.” Her UAB mentor team includes Drs. Marie Bakitas, Ed Partridge, Gabriele Rocque, and Raegan Durant.
Coming next week to Medical Grand Rounds: Arthur Weiss, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco, will present the Howard and Martha Holley Research Prize Lecture “Mutations in the Same Gene in the T Cell Receptor Signaling Pathway Lead to Immune Deficiency or Autoimmunity” at noon on Wednesday, May 23, in the Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium.
