Our patient care spotlight shines on VA Red Clinic nurse Tawanda Humphrey for the incredible way she managed a clinically unstable patient. When she recognized the veteran’s dangerously high blood pressure, Tawanda immediately called attention to the problem, triaged the patient quickly, and had him seen by one of the residents. We are deeply grateful to work along such professional and dedicated nurses!

Monica Baskin, PhD (Professor, Preventive Medicine) was recognized for her mentoring of Tiffany Carson, PhD (Assistant Professor, Preventive Medicine) by the National Cancer Institute’s Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities. Their story is featured on the NCI CRCHD blog.
Crystal M. Taylor, MS (Graduate Student, Nephrology) recently won the 2017-2018 Porter Physiology Development Fellowship from the American Physiological Society. David Pollock, PhD (Professor, Nephrology) is her mentor.
Lydia McCormick (MS-2) won the prestigious Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship from the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) National Office. Lydia was awarded the fellowship for her project, “The Effect of Maternal Smoking on Neonatal CFTR Dysfunction” with Steven Rowe, MD (Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy & Critical Care Medicine).
The Clerkship Program recognized Elizabeth Fix (MS-4) with the distinguished Tinsley Harrison Award which is given each year to a student whose performance on the internal medicine clerkship embodies the characteristics of humility, intellectual curiosity, and hard work.
Norma Stewart (Administrative Associate, Nephrology) is Employee of the Month for May 2017. In her 13 years with the division, Norma has actively worked to improve the lives of patients, providing outstanding support to faculty and dedicated service to the Nephrology Research and Training Center.
