Geriatric Symposium Donita White and RaShundra Hardy McKinney display their project at the annual symposiumKellie Flood, MD (Associate Professor, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) and Emily Simmons, MSN, RN (NICHE Coordinator) led the ninth annual UAB Geriatric Quality Symposium on Friday, September 21, celebrating the collaboration of 27 interprofessional Geriatric Scholars in 9 quality improvement projects, and 9 Patient Support Geriatric Scholars in 3 educational projects. The formal presentation included outcomes reports, recognition of scholars and community partners, awards for outstanding geriatric care. To top it all off, 39 inter-professional scholars and 20 patient support scholars were accepted into next year’s Geriatric Scholar Program. Kudos on this incredible interprofessional effort!

More Good News for September 26, 2018

German Henostroza, MD (Associate Professor, Infectious Diseases) and colleagues have published results of a Phase 2 Controlled Trial of a vaccine to prevent tuberculosis in the New England Journal of Medicine. They found that the agent provided 54.0% protection for M. tuberculosis–infected adults against active pulmonary tuberculosis disease, without evident safety concerns.

Roslyn Mannon, MD (Professor, Nephrology) has been appointed Section Chief of Transplant Nephrology for the division effective October 1. Her research has garnered international recognition in the fields of nephrology and transplantation, and she has active research funding from NIH, VA, and several industry entities. She currently serves as the Director for Research for the UAB Comprehensive Transplant Institute and the Medical Director for the renal transplant program at the Birmingham VA Medical Center. Congrats, Dr. Mannon!

Ronit Elk, PhD (Professor, Geriatrics, Gerontology and Palliative Care) and Marie Bakitas, DNSc (Professor, Nursing) have received a RO1 grant from National Institute of Nursing Research to study the treatment of rural patients in the Deep South with life threatening illnesses by using tele-consult intervention programs. They hope to form a model for future culturally-based palliative care programs.

Monica Baskin, PhD (Professor, Preventive Medicine) won the Dean’s Excellence Award for Diversity Enhancement for senior faculty. See her video interview online.

Coming next week to Medical Grand Rounds: UAB Medicine Chief Compliance Officer Brian Bates, CPA, and HSF Medical Compliance Officer Stephen Stair, MD, will present “Compliance 2018: Mission Possible” at noon on October 3, 2018, in Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium.   • On Saturday, September 29, 2018, the Young Professionals Board of the UAB Minority Health & Health Disparities Research Center (MHRC) will present Harlem in the 'Ham a fun-filled party with a purpose - to benefit Healthy Happy Kids, the MHRC’s childhood obesity intervention.   • A special Pulmonary Grand Rounds lecture will be given by Margaret Carfora at noon on on October 4 in the Finley Kaul Conference Center. Margaret is a CF patient 15 years post lung transplantation without ECMO. Her clinical course was complicated by mild left main stem stenosis, acute cellular lung rejection, esophageal lymphoma followed by chemotherapy, cervical cancer, breast cancer requiring bilateral mastectomy. She plans to present on her complications with CF and transplant.
  • Register now for the third annual Run for Resilience Ostomy 5K that will be held on October 6 at George Ward Park. The registration fee is $15 for adults and $10 for children.

  • The DOM Promotion and Tenure Workshop will be held in BDB 334 on October 17 at 4 p.m. This workshop is intended for all faculty members seeking promotion or award of tenure this 2019 cycle, and junior faculty that want to prepare for future cycles. 
  • Register now for the Advocating for Gender Equity panel that will be held on Tuesday, October 30 from 1 – 3:00 p.m. in Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium. The panel consists of five leaders who are committed to advancing women at UAB. 
  • Register now for the SIIPSC Summit November 1-2 at the Embassy Suites in Hoover. Experts in the field of palliative care from across the nation will address the specific issues of providing palliative care in the Southeast.
