DOM bids a fond farewell to this year’s outgoing Chief Medical Residents. Amanda Brito, MD will pursue a fellowship in Patient Safety and Quality at Harvard Medical School. Three will remain at UAB: Mack Brown, MD will practice general medicine in Primary Care; and Karla Williams, MD and Rob Smola, MD will become academic hospitalists here. Thanks for a terrific year of leadership in the Internal Medicine Residency Program!
On a related note, we want to warmly welcome the four new CMRs who will lead our Internal Medicine Residency Program in 2018-2019: James Barrios, MD; Joanna Zurko, MD; Jeremey Walker, MD; and KeAndrea Titer, MD.
Alexander Szalai, PhD (Professor, Clinical Immunology & Rheumatology) has been awarded a Lupus Research Program Impact Award from the Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs for his proposal “Effects of ITGAM Genetic Variation on Mac-1 Mediated Function of B Cells.”
Congratulations to two fellows who were recognized at the North American Young Rheumatology Investigator Forum. Alvin Lee Day, MD was the Runner-up Winner in the Best Oral Presentation category with his presentation on “A Case Series & Proposed Diagnostic Algorithm for Hypophosphatemia in the Setting of Metabolic Bone Disease.” Thao Nguyen Tran, MD won the Best Poster Presentation for her poster on “Necrotizing Sarcoid Granulomatosus.”
Congratulations to Carrie Lenneman, MD (Associate Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) who has received funding from the UAB Faculty Development Grant Program which provides seed money for research, scholarly activity, and creative works by providing funds to undertake new efforts for which money is not generally available. Her grant is entitled “Characterizing the Cardiac Effects of Immune Checkpoints Inhibitors.”
Congratulations to Jacob Elrod, MD (PGY-1) who received the C. Glenn Cobbs Award for Excellence (a.k.a., the "Book Award") for his outstanding history and physical write-ups at the VA during the month of April 2018.
Congratulations to Thomas Buford, PhD, FACSM, FAHA (Associate Professor, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) who was recently elected as a Fellow in The Gerontological Society of America, a top honor in the field of aging research.
Luciano Costa, MD, PhD (Associate Professor, Hematology/Oncology) is recruiting for a multiple myeloma clinical trial that will provide a new treatment protocol designed for newly diagnosed multiple myeloma patients.
Coming next week to Medical Grand Rounds: Martha Twaddle, MD, Associate Professor and Medical Director for Palliative and Supportive Care, Northwestern Medicine–Lake Forest Hospital, will present the annual Deane K. Corliss Lecture, “The Intersection of Palliative Care, Community and Population Health” at noon on Wednesday, June 6, in the Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium.

- Lace Up for a Cure, a 2K Walk benefitting the Comprehensive Cancer Center, will be held on Saturday, June 2nd at UAB Campus Green (1602 9th Avenue South).
- RIME Call for Abstracts: The 8th Annual Research and Innovations in Medical Education (RIME) Week celebrating excellence in medical education will be held September 12-13, 2018. An Abstract Poster Presentation for fellows and faculty will enhance your teaching effectiveness. Call for Abstracts submission deadline is Friday August 7, 2018.
- Save the Date: The UAB Comprehensive Cardiovascular Center’s 7th Annual Symposium: Focus on Heart Failure will take place September 6-7, 2018 at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel. The two-day update in cardiovascular disease will feature keynotes from Thomas J. Wang, MD, Physician-in-Chief at Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute, and Douglas L. Mann, MD, Cardiologist-in-Chief at Barnes Jewish Hospital. Submit abstracts to Megan Pickering.
