More Good News for August 8, 2018
Turner Overton, MD (Associate Professor, Infectious Diseases) and Paul Muntner, PhD (SOPH) have earned a large grant from the NHLBI to provide career development for eight junior faculty. Their project is entitled “UAB Institutional Career Development Program in HIV-related Heart, Lung, Blood and Research.” People living with HIV have a high risk for heart, lung, blood and sleep related diseases; therefore, the overall objective of this grant is to develop and sustain an intensive interdisciplinary mentored research training program for scholars to become leaders in the field of HIV-related diseases.
Rich Rosenthal, MD (Associate Professor, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism) spearheaded a pilot program to open up clinic access for new patients at The Kirklin Clinic. Since June of last year, the new clinic has helped increase new patients seen within 14 days from 21.8 to 31.1. Kudos to the endocrine faculty for making this expanded access possible!
Robert Bourge, MD (Professor and Senior Vice Chair of Medicine) is the recipient of a 2018 International Academy of Cardiology Distinguished Fellowship Award in honor of his significant contributions to Cardiovascular Medicine. He was one of four honored at the 23rd World Congress on Heart Disease. Congrats, Bob!
Stefan Kertesz, MD (Associate Professor, Preventive Medicine) has published a critical analysis of the U.S. opioid policy in Addiction. In this article, Dr. Kertesz critiques overly simplistic policies to reduce opioid prescribing in people with chronic pain.
The Department of Medicine is sponsoring the Equal Access Birmingham (EAB) 5th Annual Heart+Sole 5K and Fun Run on Saturday, August 18, 2018. EAB is a free clinic run by medical students which provides health care and education to Birmingham’s homeless and uninsured population.
Barbie Randall (Administrative Associate, Nephrology) has published a children’s book called “The Overworked Shoes.” In the book, she emphasizes the importance of prioritizing quality family time and personal interactions. It’s available for purchase on Amazon.
