30 Interprofessional Geriatric Scholars Celebrate Successful Completion of the Program to Improve Geriatric Care at UAB.
Kellie Flood, MD (Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) and Emily Simmons, MSN, RN, CNL, FGNLA (NICHE Coordinator) led the 10th Annual UAB Geriatric Quality Symposium on Friday, September 6, celebrating the collaboration of 30 interprofessional Geriatric Scholars in 6 quality improvement projects and 14 Patient Support Geriatric Scholars in 5 educational projects. The formal presentation included outcomes reports, recognition of scholars and community partners, and awards for outstanding geriatric care. Congratulations to everyone for their commitment to substantially improve our care of older adult patients at UAB!
More Good News for September 11, 2019
Mike Mugavero, MD, MHSc (Professor, Infectious Diseases) and UAB infectious diseases colleagues have been chosen to lead the national program office for HIV Care Connect. The new $7 million, five-year initiative funded by the Merck Foundation is designed to help reduce disparities in access to care and improve health outcomes for persons with HIV living in vulnerable and underserved communities across the Southeast States.
Anath Shalev, MD (Professor, Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism) and colleagues have identified an early biomarker of the pancreatic beta-cell loss associated with Type 1 diabetes in humans. They believe MicroRNA-204 may provide a new way to assess this cell death, even before the onset of overt disease, which could help efforts for early intervention and treatment for patients with diabetes.
Michael Vinikoor, MD (Assistant Professor, Infectious Diseases) has received two new grants from the NIH to study HIV in Zambia. His R01 will explore how immune control (or lack thereof) of hepatitis B inside the liver changes after antiretroviral therapy is initiated. His R34 will evaluate a new approach for patients admitted to the hospital with advanced HIV disease, who account for one-third of internal medicine admissions. Congratulations, Dr. Vinikoor!
The UAB Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology hosted a CME conference for primary care physicians with approximately 300 attendees from across the region. In addition to disease-specific updates in gastroenterology and hepatology, keynote speakers presented information on liver transplant and colonoscopy. Thanks to everyone for offering these important continuing medical education opportunities!
UAB's "Reimagining Residency" committee met for the first time to begin strategizing on their grant from the American Medical Association. The aim of the study is to identify the key elements of the learning environment that shape the professional development of residents while ensuring they are able to spend meaningful time at the bedside caring for patients.
Two Department of Medicine Professors were honored as emeritus professors during the June 7 meeting of the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees. Virginia Bradley, PhD, and Edward W. Hook, III, MD, have made exciting contributions to our divisions of Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care and Infectious Diseases respectively. Three cheers to you both!
Mohamed Magdy, MD, joined the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology as an Advanced Endoscopist in July. He specializes in treating conditions such as gastrointestinal cancers, achalasia, gastroparesis, pancreaticobiliary disease, and chronic pancreatitis. He is also skilled in advanced diagnostic and minimally invasive resection and treatment techniques. Dr. Magdy received his medical degree from Cairo University Medical School, went on to a fellowship at Mayo Clinic and East Carolina, and completed his interventional endoscopy fellowship at Emory University. Welcome to UAB, Dr. Magdy!
