Nirav Patel, MD (PGY-2, ABIM Research Pathway) has been selected as a finalist for the Elizabeth Barrett-Connor Young Investigator Award at the AHA Scientific Sessions 2019. The title of his presentation is “Trends in Lipid, Lipoproteins and Statin Use Among US Adults: Impact of the 2013 AHA/ACC Cholesterol Guidelines.” Keep up the great work, Dr. Patel!
Drs. Michal Mrug and Paul Sanders (Professors, Nephrology) have collaborated with colleagues in the UAB Department of Psychology to publish a paper in Physiological Reports. Their findings indicate that teens who consume foods with high levels of sodium and low levels of potassium are more likely to develop symptoms of depression.
German Henostroza, MD (Associate Professor, Infectious Diseases) has been elected President-Elect of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene's Clinical Group. The ASTMH is the largest international scientific organization of experts dedicated to reducing the worldwide burden of tropical infectious diseases and improving global health. Congrats, Dr. Henostroza.

The UAB Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology hosted a CME conference for primary care physicians with over 50 attendees from across the state. In addition to updates for rheumatic diseases like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, the sessions included a joint injection clinic where fellows and faculty used simulators for practicing how to successfully target the intra-articular spaces of the knees and shoulders. Nice work, everyone!
