Tom Buford, PhD (Associate Professor, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) has recently earned three NIH awards for age-related research. He is an MPI with Dr. Steven Austad on the Nathan Shock Center P30 grant to explore the basic biology of aging; he will examine interconnections between physical function, cognitive function, and pain in aging with a K02 independent scientist award; and he'll evaluate the role of the gut microbiome in regulating physical resilience in aging with an R56 grant. Dr. Buford adds these new awards to two RO1s and a T32. Kudos on these exciting new investigations!

UAB and Rehab Select will open a 16-bed unit in Talladega County to treat patients from nursing home facilities who have COVID-19. Kellie Flood, MD (Professor, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) notes the establishment of the unit is part of UAB’s efforts to help the community manage and mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
Robert Welner, PhD (Assistant Professor, Hematology and Oncology) has earned an RO1 to study the role of bone marrow regulatory T cells in the maintenance of stromal cells, aiming to identify therapeutic targets for improved outcomes in bone marrow transplantation. Congrats, Dr. Welner!
Hematology and Oncology faculty Gabrielle Rocque, MD, and Kelly Kenzik, PhD, recently published their findings that patients with metastatic breast cancer spend 7-10% of their time traveling to, waiting for, and receiving cancer care in the initial three months of treatment.
