Monica Baskin, PhDMonica Baskin, PhD (Professor, Preventive Medicine) has been appointed Associate Director of Community Outreach and Engagement in the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. In this new role, she will lead the Center’s efforts to expand the community health advisor model for disseminating key messages on cancer screening, prevention, and connecting to care in order to reduce and eliminate cancer health disparities with the highest incidence and mortality in Alabama: breast, prostate, lung and colorectal cancer.

More Good News for October 17, 2018

The DOM was delighted to celebrate the establishment of the Albert Oberman, MD, MPH, Endowed Professorship in Cardiovascular Disease on September 27. The endowment will support continued groundbreaking investigation in the Division of Preventive Medicine, which Dr. Oberman founded at UAB and led for 25 years. We are delighted to honor Dr. Oberman's distinguished contributions to cardiovascular and hypertension research through these generous philanthropic gifts.

Sonya Hardy (Clinical Trials Manager, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care) has been chosen as the University-wide employee of the month for October. Sonya has worked at UAB for 17 years in eight different positions within the School of Medicine. She is driven and dedicated to improving UAB. Kudos, Sonya!

Nine internal medicine residents worked with the East Lake Farmers Market to pack and deliver 151 bags of groceries to food-insecure residents in three government housing communities for older and disabled individuals. Kudos to these dedicated volunteers for reaching beyond the four walls of the hospital to address health disparities in our local area!

Shane Wiley, MBA will serve as the Executive Administrator for the Department of Medicine effective October 1, 2018. A native of Springville, AL, and a graduate of Jacksonville State University, Shane received his MBA from UAB. He has served as Division Administrator for Cardiovascular Disease since December 2013, and he has a proven track record of exemplary financial administrative leadership. Shane will continue to serve as Division Administrator in Cardiovascular Disease in an interim capacity until his replacement can be identified.

Vineeta Kumar, MD, (Professor, Nephrology) won the Dean’s Excellence Award for Teaching for senior faculty. See her video interview online.

Come cheer on the DOM during the Homecoming parade Friday, October 19 at noon! This year’s theme is “Blazers in the Magic City” and our float will feature our DOM faculty, staff and trainee honorees: Karla Williams, MD, Jennifer Hicks and Hilary Ragsdale, MD.   • Register now for the Southeastern Institute for Innovation in Palliative and Supportive Care Summit November 1-2 at the Embassy Suites in Hoover. Experts in the field of palliative care from across the nation will address the specific issues of providing palliative care in the Southeast.
