Drs. Axley and Shipley IM Residents Page Axley, MD (PGY3) and Lindsey Shipley, MD (PGY1) recently published a review of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. The publication was listed as one of the top 10 most read articles in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy News in 2018. It discusses the growth of NAFLD and its relation to obesity. Congrats, Drs. Axley and Shipley!

More Good News for January 23, 2019

DOM Congratulates Jayme Locke, MD, MPH (Associate Professor, Division of Transplant Surgery) has been named Director of the Comprehensive Transplant Institute. Dr. Locke is a nationally renowned abdominal transplant surgeon who specializes in innovative strategies for the transplantation of incompatible organs, disparities in access to and outcomes after solid organ transplantation, and transplantation for people living with HIV. Congratulations, Dr. Locke!

Starr Steinhilber, MD (Assistant Professor, General Internal Medicine) was featured on WBRC to discuss symptoms of the flu, how to fight it and ways to avoid spreading it to others. You can learn more about the flu by visiting the UAB flu site.

Salpy Pamboukian, MD, MPH (Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) is medical director of the VAD program. The DOM recently received a letter from a colleague turned patient commending Dr. Pamboukian for cultivating teamwork and collaboration that provides outstanding patient care – even during times of short staffing. Kudos on setting such a terrific example of clinician leadership, Dr. Pamboukian!

Gareth Dutton, PhD (Professor, Preventive Medicine) has been elected as a fellow of the Society of Behavioral Medicine. SMB is a leading professional society for research, clinical care, and public policy focused on prevention and health promotion. Congrats on this honor, Dr. Dutton!

Rebekah Barnett (Office Associate II, Infectious Diseases) was selected as the Department of Medicine Employee of the Month for January! Rebekah always takes extra steps to help division employees and displays the same helpful attitude when working with faculty, fellows, residents and staff. Her contributions extend to the Department of Medicine as well, through her service on committees, fundraising campaigns, health fairs and web site coordination. Think of others you know and nominate them for this distinction.

Rebekah Weil, MD (Assistant Professor, General Internal Medicine) is returning to UAB after completing a General Internal Medicine Fellowship for Medical Education at Oregon Health and Science University. She is a clinician-educator who works in outpatient clinics as well as inpatient services at Birmingham VA Medical Center and University Hospital. Additionally, she has an interest in health disparities and caring for underserved patients with a clinic at Cooper Green Mercy Health System. She will also serve as director of the Internal Medicine Residency Health Disparities Track. Welcome back, Dr. Weil!

  • The 2019 UAB Medicine Diversity Fair will be held from 4 to 6:00 p.m. on January 25, in the North Pavilion Second floor atrium. Come learn about different cultures and try delicious cuisines from around the globe!
  • Mark your calendars for the next DOM Women in Medicine session at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 7, in Boshell Diabetes Building Room 334. Ashita Tolwani, MD (Professor, Nephrology) will present “Promotion.” All DOM women—residents, fellows, clinical and research faculty—are invited.
  • The Trainee Research Symposium (TRS) will be held from 1 to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6 in the North Pavilion 2nd Floor Atrium. TRS is the Department of Medicine's major research day for the Department’s residents, fellows, graduate students, and post-docs. It features a keynote address presented at Medical Grand Rounds followed by a poster session. Submit your abstract now
