More Good News for May 2, 2018

Nicholas Van Wagoner, MD, PhD (Associate Professor, Infectious Diseases) has been named Associate Dean for Students effective August 1. In this role, he will lead the Office of Medical Student Services, which offers our students exceptional individualized support, promotes professional development, and inspires overall excellence. The Department is excited to celebrate his continued contributions to medical education at UAB.

Congratulations to Stephen Russell, MD (Associate Professor, General Internal Medicine) whose article “Improving Observations Skills to Enhance the Clinical Exam” was just published. His review of Art in Medicine courses highlights UAB and the Birmingham Museum of Art and ties the unique learning experience to improving clinical bedside medicine skills. 

Congratulations to Joanna Zurko, MD (PGY-3) for being selected as a winner of the National ACP Resident/Fellow Research Competition at the 2018 Internal Medicine Meeting in New Orleans. Her winning project is entitled, “Impact of Infectious Disease Consultation on Guideline Adherence and Mortality in Patients with Candidemia.”

Mr. Patrick Ernst, a graduate research assistant, has been awarded a two-year American Heart Association Pre-doctoral Fellowship. His research project, co-mentored by Lufang Zhou, PhD (Associate Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) and Jay Zhang, PhD (Professor and Chair, Biomedical Engineering) will focus on the mechanism of cell death in human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes using a mitochondrial optogenetics approach.

Sandeep Bodduluri, PhD (Instructor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care) has received the 2018 Science and Innovation Center Abstract Award for his project titled: Silent Zones of Lung Disease in Active Smokers. He will give oral presentation of this work at the American Thoracic Society International Conference next month in San Diego. 

Lisa Willett, MD, UAB Department of Medicine Vice Chair for Education and Internal Medicine Residency Program Director will present “Joy in Medicine: The Crossroads of Patient Care and Medical Education” at noon on Wednesday, May 9, in the Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium.

  • DOM Faculty Honors Reception will be held on Monday, May 7, from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. in the West Pavilion Conference Room E. 
  • The Comprehensive Transplant Institute is hosting an event on May 8 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the first transplant at UAB. Special guests will include our first recipient’s family, his living donor, and his transplant surgeon Arnold Diethelm, MD.
