Lisa Willett, MD (Professor, General Internal Medicine) is President-Elect of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM), which is a part of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM). APDIM is the international organization of accredited internal medicine residency programs. The association represents program directors, associate and assistant program directors, core faculty, program administrators and coordinators, fellowship coordinators, and other key faculty and staff involved in the internal medicine residency program.

Congratulations to Cynthia Brown, MD, MSPH (Professor and Director, Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care) who has been chosen as Chair-Elect of the Gerontological Society of America Health Sciences Section. The GSA is the nation’s largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to the field of aging, whose membership consists of more than 5,500 researchers, educators, and practitioners.
Steven Allon, MD (PGY-1) and Allison Wood, MD (PGY-1) have been selected as UAB Primary Care Scholars for the academic year 2018-19. They will both receive a month of immersive outpatient experience. Over the next year, they will develop a scholarly project, either clinical, educational, or QI focused, to develop their research design and presentation skills. They will also be invited to attend a regional or national general medicine meeting next year.
Congratulations to Martin Young, DPhil (Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) who has received an NHLBI R01 Grant. This study revolves around the concept that circadian clocks are critical for normal housekeeping processes in the heart, such as removing damaged proteins while you sleep, and that disruption of the clock mechanism during diabetes leads to heart disease. He also plans to investigate whether strategies designed to fix the clock during diabetes will improve heart function.
Congratulations to Devika Das, MD (Assistant Professor, Hematology and Oncology) who has earned the graduate certificate in Healthcare Quality and Safety through the UAB Medicine Quality Academy.
The Comprehensive Transplant Institute is hosting an event on May 8 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the first transplant at UAB. Special guests will include our first recipient’s family, his living donor, and his transplant surgeon Arnold Diethelm, MD.
Mark your calendars for the next DOM Women in Medicine session at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, in Boshell Diabetes Building Room 334. Erin Snyder, MD (Associate Professor in General Internal Medicine) will present “Take on Leadership.” All DOM women—residents, fellows, clinical and research faculty—are invited.
Coming next week to Medical Grand Rounds: Furman McDonald, MD, Senior Vice President for Academic and Medical Affairs, American Board of Internal Medicine will present “Evidence-Based Education: Medical Knowledge Acquisition and Associations with Patient Relevant Outcomes” at noon on Wednesday, May 2, in the Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium.

- Save-the-Date: On Friday, May 4, The Young Supporters Board of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center will present Fiesta Ball 2018, an evening with live music, delicious food by Happy Catering and a silent auction, 7:00-11:00 p.m. at Haven, 2515 Sixth Avenue, South. The Fiesta Ball will support the work of young cancer research scientists and cancer outreach efforts.
