Erin Snyder, M.D., will serve as Interim Division Director for General Internal Medicine effective October 1, 2023. A graduate of our School of Medicine and UAB’s Tinsley Harrison Residency Program, Dr. Snyder has played key roles as a physician, teacher, and leader in the Division and Department. She is Professor of Medicine and Physician Director for Ambulatory Care in the Department of Medicine. She also serves as Medical Director for the Internal Medicine IV Clinic and Assistant Program Director in the Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency Program.
In her leadership role as Program Director for Ambulatory Care, Dr. Snyder has demonstrated her ability to forge collaborative partnerships at all levels across the institution. For example, her recent implementation of a task force to address the burden of portal messages with representation from MDs, APPs, CMAs, and RNs, the call center, access center, HSIS and the DOM Wellness Council shows her ability to bring multiple viewpoints to the table to take action on important initiatives and drive change.
Over the past 17 years, Dr. Snyder has built a remarkable outpatient General Internal Medicine practice at UAB, successfully leading her patients and team through transitions in electronic medical records, a new clinic space, and even ICD-10 and new outpatient billing rules. This institutional experience, combined with her leadership in the Women’s Health and Primary Care tracks in our residency program, uniquely qualify her for this role.
Dr. Snyder was recognized as GIM’s Unsung Hero in 2020, and she has earned numerous other accolades for her exemplary patient care and education, including the 2020 Brewer-Heslin Award, the 2019 Robert Kreisberg Award, two Cobbs-Rutsky Awards, and two Heudebert Awards for faculty contributions to the residency program. Her work to improve ambulatory education—in both graduate and undergraduate medical education—focuses on novel curricular approaches, improving the continuity clinic experience for residents and their patients, and improving women’s health education.
