To comply with federal regulations, UAB 911 calls originating from campus Cisco VoIP phones and analog lines on network will now route to both the Birmingham and UAB police departments, effective Sept. 30, 2024.
The simultaneous routing adds an extra layer of security for those in need of assistance.
The change currently affects those who use desk phones and analog lines on campus, and users should see no impact.
But in coming weeks, the change will affect those who use a “soft phone” — in UAB’s case, the Jabber app for VoIP phone lines. Jabber users will be required to install additional software (Remote Location Manager) to validate their physical location on their desktop devices. Users who have Jabber installed will receive targeted communication about the change.
