Starting in May 2026, files that are deleted from OneDrive will no longer appear in your computer’s local Recycle Bin (Windows) or Trash (macOS).
What’s changing?
- When you delete a file from OneDrive, it will be recoverable only from the OneDrive or SharePoint Recycle Bin on the web.
- Deleted files will remain available there for up to 93 days.
What’s not changing?
- Deleting files that are stored only on your device still works the same way.
- Files On‑Demand behavior remains unchanged.
Why this change is happening
- Improves sync performance
- Makes file recovery more reliable by using one official recycle bin in the cloud
What you need to know If you accidentally delete a OneDrive file, go to OneDrive on the web to restore it.
