To better secure BlazerID accounts, password resets with AskIT may be held face-to-face.

Passwords rarely need to be updated, but when they do it is usually a simple change through BlazerID Central. But sometimes you run into issues with resetting through the portal, such as DUO authentication not working or you lost the device tied to your DUO account. The next step is to meet with an AskIT technician.

“We’re starting these in-person requirements to ensure that we are assisting our faculty, staff, and students – not a bad actor,” said Jeff Herington, manager of the AskIT help desk.

Here is what to expect if you need to change a password in-person:

  1. A member from the TechHelp team will reach out to you via email
  1. A meeting will need to be scheduled either in person or on Zoom
  1. When joining a meeting, make sure you bring a valid ID or OneCard. If you join online, make sure your camera is on!

Information Security Architect Scott Fendley said the UAB community should be steadfast with their account protection.

“We want to ensure the safety of your data, and the universities,” Fendley. said “In this day and age, anyone can find out your basic information. Knowledge-based authentication doesn’t cut it.”

On top of having long, complex passwords and using a password manager, Fendley suggested UAB users update their eNotify preferences.

“Make sure that you have your most current contact information in the system. Some of these cases are, someone was hired ten years ago and changed phone numbers since first enrolling. They no longer have access to that number, which results in us doing an in-person password change,” Fendley said.
