Congratulations to the 2019 3MT Semifinalists
More than 60 doctoral students participated in the 2018 Three Minute Thesis preliminary competition October 24 and 29, and more than half of those students will advance to the semi-finals on Thursday, October 31.

The Spring 2019 UAB Doctoral Hooding Ceremony and Master's Student Commencement was held April 26 at the Bartow Arena. During the spring, more than 700 students earned graduate degrees, including 63 doctoral degrees. The Graduate School would like to congratulate all of the Spring 2019 graduates!

UAB Will Celebrate Graduate Student Appreciation Week April 1-5
The UAB Graduate School and the Graduate Student Government are very excited to announce this year's schedule of activities for Graduate Student Appreciation Week. This year's theme is Mental Health, and each day will focus on a particular aspect of mental health -- mind, body, relationships, work-life balance and fun!!

Mark Pepin and Antonio Foles are the recipients of the 2019 UAB Samuel B. Barker Award for Excellence in Graduate Studies.
“The Barker Award,” named for UAB’s first graduate dean, Dr. Samuel Booth Barker, is given each spring to one Ph.D. student and one Master’s student, both of whom expect to receive their degrees within the calendar year. The Barker Awards are given to graduate students who represent the highest level of student achievement in a UAB graduate program.

Participants submitted an image and six words depicting any story they wanted to tell—about their life, their experiences, things they love or have learned. And the submissions were amazing!

Graduate School and GSG Team Up to Make a Difference in 2019
The UAB Graduate School and Graduate Student Government will be hosting “Cookies, Cocoa and Community” on Thursday, January 10, 2019. This fun and casual event serves as a kick-off to a month-long Collection Drive for the Ronald McDonald House. It is also one of several events that are part of UAB’s Community Month.

Jimmedda Mills was not what you would consider a “perfect” soldier. Her childhood dreams didn’t involve wearing a uniform and deploying to far-off places. The Texas native enlisted because she was mad at her parents and wanted to get far away. She stayed for the monetary or educational benefits. It wasn’t until Mills was ready to leave the Army that she fell in love with it and found her purpose in life – to be a leader.
