The UAB campus community was challenged to tell us a story with only 6 words and a visual aid during UAB Graduate School's sixth annual Say It In 6 competition. Participants submitted an image and six words depicting any story they wanted to tell — about their life, their experiences, things they love or have learned. And the submissions were amazing!
The Graduate School received more than 125 creative, moving entries from UAB students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty and staff. Images ranged from photographs to drawings and paintings that all complemented their six-word stories perfectly.
A preliminary judging panel picked the top two for each category in both the student and faculty/staff divisions, which was no easy task. The categories were Compassion, Empowerment, Grad & Gold, Inclusion, and Sustainability. The first and second place winners were chosen by a final judging panel, which included Dan Carsen, teacher at The Altamont School and Director of The Altamont Heritage Panel; Stephanie Fisher, owner of Stephanie Fisher Photography in Helena; Lindsay Benson, library clerk at the Albert L. Scott Library; and Will Lochamy, cohost of the Morning Blend w/ Reg and Will and Oh Brother radio on Birmingham Mountain Radio. The UAB community voted online to pick a People's Choice winner. The top three student winners received cash prizes: $1,000 for first place, $750 for second place, and $500 for People's Choice. The top three faculty/staff winners received gift baskets.
