The Faculty Senate commended Provost Linda Lucas for her outstanding service to UAB at the February Faculty Senate meeting. We express our sincere appreciation to Dr. Linda Chambers Lucas for her faithful, thoughtful and effective service as Provost of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and extend our best wishes for her continued success and a magnificent retirement. The resolution reads as follows.
 
WHEREAS, Linda C. Lucas, Ph.D. has faithfully served in many roles at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, including researcher, faculty member, Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Dean of the School of Engineering, and as Provost; and
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Lucas received 6 graduate degrees including her Ph.D. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham; and 
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Lucas began her research career at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as a Research Associate in the Department of Biomaterials (School of Dentistry) and Division of Orthopedic Surgery (School of Medicine) and subsequently moved to the School of Engineering where she was promoted from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor with tenure and later to Full Professor; and
 
WHEREAS, throughout her tenure at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Lucas has exemplified integrity in teaching, research, care for all students and fellow faculty members and an outstanding promotion of equity for all in research and education; and
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Lucas has conducted exceptional research in biomedical engineering, funded by 72 research grants totaling over $14,000,000; and 
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Lucas has published over 60 peer reviewed articles that have greatly informed the area of biomedical engineering; and 
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Lucas has advised 21 masters students, 8 PhD students, and 4 post-doctoral students in Engineering; and
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Lucas’ service to the University and the nation are exemplified by her continuous service as a peer reviewer for scientific journals and grant reviews and her service in local and national science and community organizations; and 
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Lucas’ dedication to the UAB Faculty is exemplified by her close working relationship with all faculty members and a dedication to ensure that all faculty members have adequate resources, guidance and encouragement to reach their full potential; and   
 
WHEREAS, Dr. Lucas has, throughout her tenure as Provost, exemplified with diplomacy and discretion, the highest dedication to shared governance, thus encouraging transparency and accountability in all matters affecting all members of the UAB community and assuring all voices were heard;
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham expresses its sincere appreciation to Dr. Linda Chambers Lucas for her faithful, thoughtful and effective service as Provost of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the Senate herewith extends to her our best wishes for her continued success and a magnificent retirement.
