Roy Koomullil, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, recently was named as a recipient of a 2021 Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) Summer Faculty Fellowship.
As a part of this fellowship, Koomullil will be working with the researchers at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. Koomullil’s research focus will be on computational modeling of radiative heat transfer which is an important mode of heat transfer for high temperature flows, such as hypersonic flows. Additionally, he will be evaluating different numerical methods for solving radiative transfer equation.
Koomullil has more than 20 years’ experience researching computational fluid dynamics, moving-body simulations, pollutant transport simulations, overset mesh technology and biomedical-flow modeling. Prior to joining UAB, he served as an assistant research professor at the NSF Engineering Research Center at Mississippi State and as the Berkeley Research Associate at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C.
