About Our Department

We are committed to excellence in oral health education, research, and patient care.

In addition to providing core predoctoral didactic and clinical education, our department's postdoctoral (residency) programs offer specialized care for patients with debilitated oral health, providing advanced treatments and restorative procedures. These residency programs include Advanced Education in Prosthodontics, Advanced Education in Maxillofacial Prosthetics, and General Practice Residency and Advanced Education in General Dentistry programs, all of which serve as a second tier of patient care and provide the D.M.D. program with both clinical and teaching support. The department also offers auxiliary academic programs, addressing current and future labor force needs by educating a competent and efficient oral health care team. Research conducted by the department aims to augment the body of knowledge through laboratory, clinical, and materials research for the prevention and treatment of oral diseases.

Welcome to the UAB Department of Periodontology. We are committed to optimizing the overall health of our patients and the community through superior periodontal care, education, and outreach. Periodontology

The Department of Periodontology is actively engaged in clinical and translational research that truly focuses upon the UAB School of Dentistry’s core values: excellence, patient-centered, innovation, and unity of purpose. We aim to conduct research that meets the highest standards in a state-of-the-art facility to provide benefits to our patients and to expand the knowledge base in periodontology. Our research interests include periodontal-systemic connection, innovative regenerative technologies, dental implant innovations, epigenetics, and the periodontal microbiome.

Facilities

Our Graduate Periodontal Clinic is a state-of-the-art facility with five surgical suites and five treatment rooms. We also have a dedicated front desk staff, three skilled dental assistants, and two experienced dental hygienists in a dedicated wellness facility. Digital radiography facilities are in each operatory along with a NOMAD portable radiograph machine for use in nonsurgical and wellness rooms. Both panoramic and CBCT machines are located within the clinical enterprise.

Our Periodontal Research Clinic, located adjacent to the Graduate Periodontal Clinic, has two treatment rooms and one surgical suite as well as a full complement of clinical research materials and storage facilities.

UAB Dentistry is physically connected to both the University Hospital and the Veteran’s Administration Hospital. This allows easy passage to these two facilities where important clinical activities of the advanced education program in Periodontology may be undertaken. Other education, recreational, and research facilities at UAB, a major urban university and medical center, are conveniently located and may be utilized by students in the advanced education programs. The more pertinent of these include the Lister Hill Health Science Library, the Animal Service Facilities, the Bevill Biomedical Sciences, and the Shelby Biomedical Research Buildings.

Alumni Spotlight

Pediatric dentistry is the specialty of an age group rather than specific techniques. The field requires extensive knowledge of normal growth and development, behavior management, and all phases of prevention-oriented dentistry in both healthy and compromised patients.

We provide both primary and comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care to individuals with special health care needs. Our postgraduate educational programs help prepare graduates for careers in community practice and/or academics and board certification in pediatric dentistry.

Our goal is to bring brighter, healthier smiles to the world. Focused on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of malocclusions, we strive to provide excellent patient-centered orthodontic care to children and adults alike.

At the heart of our department is a skilled and devoted faculty supported by a caring administrative and clinical staff. Our primary objective is to educate ethical, compassionate, and versatile practitioners in the art and science of orthodontics.

Every year, our students from all corners of the globe bring in fresh perspectives and boundless energy. While we are known for our outstanding graduate programming, clinical training, and research, our goal is to equip both pre- and post-doctoral students alike with the necessary foundation and skills in orthodontics, according to their level.

Orthodontics

The UAB Department of Orthodontics is dedicated to researching orthodontic problems through a network of clinicians and scientists. Our clinical and basic laboratory enhance the diagnosis and treatment of these problems. We have research projects in the area of 3D imaging, CBCT Technology, Cleft and Craniofacial Anomalies, TMJ arthritis, root resorbtion and clinical translational sciences. The Department has continuous funding with the NIH and industry totaling almost US$3 Million in the last 5 years

Facilities

The Department of Orthodontics is located on the 3rd floor of the School of Dentistry building.

Our team practices in a facility with 17 newly equipped operatories, a laboratory, a computer/video imaging room, two conference rooms, and a project room. Our facilities are furnished with with digital radiology equipment, two state-of-the-art CBCT Imaging Systems, a 3dMD Surface Imaging System, and both intra-oral/extra-oral digital impression scanning technologies. The clinic also utilizes digital photography, computer-based patient check in and appointment scheduling, and digital charts.

From cosmetic surgery to cancer care and wisdom teeth to facial prostheses, our team provides exceptional opportunities for our residents and strives to provide the best possible care for all patients. While our team serves several hospitals within the UAB Medical Center, most patients are seen at the University Hospital, the Birmingham Veteran's Administration Hospital, Children's Hospital and the Eye Foundation Hospital.

Our goal is to bridge the gap between academic clinical research and real-world application to generate new knowledge to improve patient care and outcomes. In academic clinical settings, research is about developing applications for dental care and determining efficacy in highly controlled, ideal settings. In the community, it's about determining effectiveness in real-world settings in which clinicians and patients may be operating under a wide range of constraints, motivations, and incentives. Ultimately, knowledge from the community setting can provide ideas for new studies and lead to improvements in the academic setting.
