Migrating Canvas Media to Kaltura My Media

Learning Technology: Kaltura Media Space

Canvas Media should be replaced with Kaltura embeds or Media Gallery published videos of the same video content. Canvas Media lacks necessary accessibility features.  To do so, you will download the Canvas Media video file from Canvas, upload the media to Kaltura then replace the Canvas Media embed or link in Canvas with a Kaltura embed or link in Canvas.  Details on this process are below.

Canvas Media in your course will have this distinct look:

All published (available to students in Canvas) media that look like the above image should be migrated to Kaltura for better compliance with Title II

A good starting place is the first item in your first module. Open this item and click ‘Next’, until you have examined each published module item in your course, remediating Canvas Media as you go.

There are two basic methods to add Canvas Media to a course: Module link or link/embed into a Canvas page, discussion, assignment, quiz description or quiz question. Which method was used to add the media to the course determines the method needed to replace the Canvas Media with Kaltura media.

To identify which method was used to add the item to the course, look at the Canvas Media object on the page. If you see a filename with a video extension (.mp4, webm, mov, etc) with download below it, you have a linked module item. If you do not see a filename with Download below, you have a Rich Content Editor (RCE) embed. Jump to the RCE section for this embed type.
