Dr. Meredith Henry earned her Ph.D. in Psychology with a concentration in Developmental Psychology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2016. Her dissertation work investigated bidirectional relationships among adolescent sleep behaviors and internalizing (e.g., depression and anxiety) and externalizing (e.g., aggression and substance use) symptoms (Dissertation Chair: Dr. Sylvie Mrug). The program provided her with opportunities to teach a variety of psychology courses, where she discovered a passion for using psychological principles to improve undergraduate education. Her training was complemented by additional professional development programs through the UAB Graduate School such as CIRTL@UAB and the Mentoring & Leadership program that helped her build a strong foundation in pedagogical knowledge and academic management. Henry completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Science Education Research at Emory University, where she helped co-found the NSF-funded research collaborative FLAMEnet–Factors affecting Learning, Attitudes, and Mindsets in Education network. FLAMEnet aims to bring together psychologists, education researchers, STEM instructors, and administrators to find ways to help STEM undergraduates more effectively approach and deal with academic failures and challenges. Beginning in Fall 2021, Henry will serve as Lecturer of Psychology at Georgia State University. In this lecture-track faculty position, she will focus on providing high-quality educational experiences for undergraduates while continuing her research to make higher education contexts more effective for students and instructors.
