Dr. Martinique Perkins Waters is a tenured Assistant Professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences at the University of West Alabama (UWA). She regularly teaches General Psychology, Fundamentals of Psychological Research, Developmental Psychology, and Experimental Psychology at the undergraduate level while rotating special topic courses on Black Psychology and Health in Adulthood. She also teaches 2 levels of Advanced Data Analysis and Advanced Developmental Psychology for graduate students. Waters holds a B.S. in Psychology from Louisiana State University, M.A. in Psychology from Southeastern Louisiana University, and her Ph.D. in Psychology with a concentration in Developmental Psychology from UAB. With her focus on gerontology, she trained under Dr. David Roth, formerly of the UAB School of Public Health (SOPH) Department of Biostatistics, examining all-cause mortality risk for caregivers of stroke survivors. During her post-graduate training, she became a Resource Centers for Minority Aging Research health disparities scholar and is currently serving in a 2 year term on the National RCMAR Scientist Advisory Board. As Waters’ research has always centered around health and race, her research program has expanded to include the intersecting factors of low income and rural environments to better serve the population in Sumter County (where UWA is located).
