Students, alumni and faculty from the UAB College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Art and Art History, Department of Music, and Digital Media won Gold and Silver awards at the 59th annual American Advertising Awards.

Hua Perry won Student Best of Show and a Gold ADDY in the Campaign category for “Still Life Series.”Presented by the American Advertising Federation of Birmingham, the American Advertising Awards, or ADDY Awards, are the advertising industry’s largest and most representative competition, attracting more than 40,000 entries nationally every year in local AAF Club competitions. The 2017 judges were Art Chantry, Troy Burwell and John Spalding. The mission of the American Advertising Awards competition is to recognize and reward the creative spirit of excellence in the art of advertising.

Many of the student winners are part of UAB Digital Media, an in-house creative agency within the university. The Digital Media Fellows  program is a paid student program in which students from a variety of disciplines work in teams to produce media content for clients. Others are or have been part of Bloom Studio, a student graphic design studio in the Department of Art and Art History led by Doug Barrett, MFA, associate professor of graphic design. Bloom focuses on “DESIGN FOR GOOD” projects for local nonprofits and underserved communities, and provides opportunities for students to work directly with clients and community members on environmental, economic and social service projects.
