Seventeen graduating University of Alabama at Birmingham students will have their works featured in a Bachelor of Fine Arts exhibition April 24-May 6, with a free opening reception from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 28.
The students, in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Art and Art History, have produced works that represent deep focus in the department’s individual studio areas as well as interdisciplinary approaches across media, says Chair Lauren Lake, MFA.
The BFA exhibition is a highlight of the BFA undergraduate career, as it demonstrates and celebrates students’ accomplishments, Lake says.
The artists are Mikala Buwalda of Harvest; Erin Croxton of Montgomery; Ala Ismail of Tulkarm, Palestine; Dan Nagorneac of Chișinău, Moldova; Melody Hollenbeck of Wetumpka; Katelyn Ledford of Birmingham; Meredith Martin of Pinson; Bryce Martinez of Mountain Brook; Augusta McKewen of Jackson, Mississippi; Eric Moore of Birmingham; Jacob Phillips of Dothan; Samantha Richardson of Pinson; Vincent Rizzo of San Antonio, Florida; Daniel Senko of West Palm Beach, Florida; and Annie Strong of Hayden.
The BFA exhibition, free and open to the public, will be on show at the CAS’ Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts, 1221 10th Ave. South. Call 205-975-6436 or visit AEIVA online at www.uab.edu/cas/aeiva. AEIVA is open to the public 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 12-6 p.m. Saturday. It is closed Sundays and holidays.
The Department of Art and Art History’s Bachelor of Fine Arts degree offers students an intensive exploration across a breadth of media, and within a depth of discipline that allows the undergraduate student to prepare to be an artist or designer, to begin a career in the arts, or to continue his or her studies in graduate school. Students gain skills and competencies including team-based learning, technology, communication, aesthetic judgment, interdisciplinary and innovative approaches, critical analysis, and professional development throughout their program of study.
